Multiple Questions about Acoustic and Electric Guitar?

Ok i will be switching to electric guitar not to long time now. I know my blues pentatonic scale but, I find it hard to pick them with a pick but its easy to pick them with my thumb. How should i start learning to pick them with a pick as good as i'm able to pick them with my thumb? Also is it possible to shred on a acoustic guitar (its a first act guitar btw. Wal Mart Brand lol. Don't worry ima get a Ibanez ART300 soon) Or should i just wait to learn shredding when i get my Ibanez. Is the pentatonic scale gonna come in handy for shredding?

Thanks y'all.

Congrats on choosing the guitar!! As a luthier and a player i deal with questions like this often. playing with your thumb will give you a warmer tone, but is hard to play fast with at first. Playing with a pick will allow you to play much faster at the start, but you might not always have a pick handy!! I would suggest hybrid picking. It means using a pick, and then using the rest of your picking hand fingers (no pinky at first) to pluck the strings. This will allow you the best of both worlds. If shred is your hearts desire then use a pick. It doesnt matter what guitar your playing, the music and technique transfers from acoustic to electric. Some of the fastest players can do their fastest playing on either. Although the electric lends itself to lower action(string height) making players feel that they can play faster. Good luck!!
